A Megalong pastoral getaway

In May 2026, Nature Trail’s Tour Director took time out to have a getaway with his wife, but not too far a drive from Katoomba – try 45 minutes door-to-door, and staying Blue Mountains local.

We returned to one of our favourite retreats – The Megalong nearby – somewhere.  Megalong means ‘valley‘ in Aboriginal, so it’s quite a tautology to say ‘Megalong Valley’, but the Blue Mountains Council has its presumed wisdom to formally rename ‘Megalong’ to ‘Megalong Valley’, albeit misguided.

The place down the Megalong we choose is one that we have previously stayed five times  for over the past decade.  It’s because it ticks all the boxes on our bucket list to suit us.

Here ’tis upon our arrival:

Somewhere down in the Megalong – bucolic.  It’s autumn in New South Wales; rather fresh and damp, rain pending – and it eventuated audible overight whilst snug inside.

So, it’s just the two of us, the place is exclusively private.  We have planned and collected all our supplies, the ironbark wood stack is loaded on the verandah for the open fireplace, plus there’s an outdoor fire pit in the paddock adjacent under the stars, outdoor hot tub, rural seclusion, kangaroos doing their thing, hugely comfy cabin with quality amenites and the silent bliss.  Like, it is totally silent at night!

But wait, there’s more…back deck!

Two nights, three days.  Can it get any better?  (One of our previous trips).

Back into our remote bush cabin…

The late afternoon sun is getting low and it’s time to prepare dinner and light a fire place.  Ironbark – the best!  There is no airconditioning or central heating.  This is the real deal rural deal.

Then next morning, awoken by the native Kookaburra bird dawn chorus, one’s quality barista coffee awaits just a 15 minute drive away. Your second day all set.

Welcome to the Megalong.
