Our colleague has fed us some disturbing feedback about what’s been recently going down in the new blue tourist office outside Katoomba Station.

Word has it is that the tourist entrapment office is controlled by a handful of the dominant Katoomba tourism operators in the Blue Mountains.

It’s a deliberate positioning strategy by the all controlling Blue Mountains Accommodation and Tourism Association (BMATA).  It’s BMLOT politics and exploitation regurgitated.  Management is similarly totalitarian and politically self-interested.

Blue Mountains City Council has questioned the motivation.  Is this tourist shop just extravagant duplication of its proper Information Office at Echo Point?

Or is it a sly funnelling agency to capture and channel day tripper sales to its few dominant mass tourism operators – who run and control BMATA?

The tourist entrapment office employs Blue Mountains locals on a hand-to-mouth casual basis in the same way that fast food chains abuse teenagers.

The place has managed to con 20+ local slaves dubbed “volunteers” to be rostered weekly to advise tourists where to go.  None has any qualifications nor has been asked to provide CVs, references or pass any background checks.

Our colleague says visitor advice given is typically chennled to the dominate tourism operators, else provided uninformed, vaguely like guesswork or is just basically rubbish.  The first supervisor turned out to be schizoid.

Recently the controlling management has ordered its spruiking slaves to demand tourists upon entry contribute gold coin donations, insisting upon a target total of $50 per day, or else!

Our colleague says the operation is nothing more than a mass tourism sales spruiking agency to serve the handful of millionaire tourist operators.

Blue Mountains independent tourism operators offering accommodation, tours, eateries and other service have been enticed to join BMATA on the promise of extra publicity by being allowed to display their brochures in the tourist entrapment office an on the BMATA website.

But BMATA tourism membership fees are greedily exhorbitant, ranging from $250 to $4500 for the privilege of displaying advertising material in the shop.    Feedback is that it is rare that visitors funnelled into the tourist entrapment office are ever shown member brochures.  The BMATA website is similarly a waste of advertising spend.

BMATA management command to the slaves is to serve their financial overlords – the dominant few tourism operators.  BMATA member advertising spend is just dead money, exploited to pay rent of $1200 a week and the boss’s retainer.

The tourist entrapment office was greedily hatched.  Exploitation is unsustainable and as BMLOT President Randall Walker will recount, greedy power repeating?.
